A shared digital foundation for education
The establishment of KREN started in 2019 through the Kosovo Digital Economy (KODE) project, supported by the International Development Association (IDA) and implemented within the Ministry of Economy. Today KREN operates within the Ministry of Digitalization and Public Administration (MDAP).
All of KREN’s activities, investments, hardware, software and communication infrastructure are dedicated to the needs of education, public and private higher education institutions, and since January 2023 also around 250 primary and secondary schools that have joined the KREN community and infrastructure.
Because Kosovo’s education community is compact, KREN can act both as a service provider and as an identity provider: it delivers services directly to its members and serves as a one-stop shop for licenses and digital tools.
Three objectives behind everything we build
Advanced communication infrastructure
A unified network built only for education, separate from commercial networks and designed for the security, customisation and scalability academia needs. The KREN network and data center have been fully operational since January 2022.
Platforms and software as services
Shared platforms that let institutions collaborate, share information and manage projects. Central procurement lowers costs, and KREN provides professional support for installing and configuring new services.
Community collaboration
A connected education ecosystem: better communication and coordination between schools, universities and research centres, shared resources, and joint projects funded by local and international sources.
